Permanent Markers

How to clean magic marker ink from stone?

I'm renovating a house that has sat vacant for at least a year, most likely longer. There is a gorgeous stone hearth in front of the fireplace. The dust and mouse turds cleaned right up and scrubbing with some Simple Green and a nylon brush made most of it look like new. Except for one section, where it appears someone drew on the stone with maybe crayon maybe magic marker maybe something else. Is this hopelessly stained or is there something that can lift the color out?

  1. Try scrubbing it with a mixture of clorox and water. That may remove the stains.
  2. Try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I've been able to take out a LOT of stuff with that. Haven't tried magic marker, but it works great on other marks that I thought would never come out. Good Luck!
  3. Have you tried salt, water and a brush? This works well for me when my kids color on the concrete patio outside.
  4. Soft Scrub....try it.....I use it for EVERYTHING....especially magic marker
  5. Try using Mister cleans eraser it works great on most things.
  6. What type of stone? If something with a glaze, try either hair spray and wipe with cloth, or try lacquer thinner and wipe. Since this is on the fireplace hearth, I am guessing it is probably a non glazed stone slab, probably limestone. If this is the case, the marker would permeate the porous stone surface, and will not scrub out. You may try some abrasive techniques such as belt sanding, or if you have access to an angle grinder, they make a flexible grinding disk for 'polishing' stone. I have tried both of these and have had good success. Good luck. Both tools would be available at a rental center if you dont own them
  7. I agree with the other's who mentioned trying to use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I have used those for many hard to clean items and have had pretty good luck with them.
  8. You should use Solumel. It is great, nontoxic, safe for you and your family. Plus it is less expensive than a lot of products. Just email me and I'll help you get some. lmachroli@hotmail.com
