Permanent Markers

I've decorated a hi-vis vest using fabric markers and permanent marker. How do I set the design?

Also, how would I set a design created with fabric markers on a T-shirt? The hi-vis vest says it needs to be washed as synthetics and ironed on a cool level. The T-shirt is some cotton-type material, kinda stretchy. What about if I used fabric paints? What would I do then?

  1. don't you have to cover the design with a cloth and iron over it to set it?
  2. You can place it in the dryer with low heat to set the color, or you can also use an iron. Be sure to put an white cloth over the designs so that the heat will not transfer the color onto the iron. You could also use paper towels.
  3. Depends on what the vest is made from. If the fabric is not the sort to be ironed but has a vinyl coating why not paint over your design with PVA glue and let it dry, as once it's dry it will give a clear waterproof covering. If it can be ironed, then cover with a cloth and iron to set the colours. On the t-shirt, it may help when you first wash it to wash it in salt water to help set the colours.
  4. I have always used a cloth dampened with vinegar laid on top of the fabric and used a warm iron to set the colour...this was when I used acrylics.. I have been using this method for years and have never had a problem with it..
