Permanent Markers

How do the chemicals the remove a permanent marker remove that stain?

I am doing a project, and I need to know how the chemicals that remove permanent marker remove them. For example, if i got Sharpi and my t-shirt, and I used rubbing alcohol to get it out. Why was the rubbing alcohol able to get the stain out? What goes on between the chemicals of the rubbing alcohol and sharpi marker stain?

1. I don't think it would. And I haven't found anything that will take Sharpie out of fabric. Now, I am able to remove Sharpie from a hard surface with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Since the manufacturer keeps the chemical make-up of the eraser a secret, I don't know why it works.
