CEA Tumor Marker Test Range? Hi. Someone I know is going through cancer treatment (colorectal). His CEA score started at 12, went down to 6.5, and is now up to 25. Other than it going in the wrong direction, what do scores really mean? What is the possible range on the CEA tumor marker scale? Does it go up to 100, 1000, forever? Is there any correlation between # and prognosis or is it just that if it goes up, it's not good? Thanks! The tumor has not been removed, he's unable to have additional CT scans due to an allergic reaction to the chemicals used for that process, and he is presently doing chemo only (no radiation therapy yet).
Is there any minimum required level for Carcino Embryonic Antigen and for Tumor Marker - PSA in the body? In a lab test for Carcino Embryonic Antigen, the result was 1.8 ng/ml , and the normal value is said to be 3.0 ng/ml for non-smokers and 5.0 ng/ml for smokers. How significant is a tumor marker of 90? My mother is a breast cancer survivor, however, I just heard today that her marker has gone up from the mid 30s to the 90s (I'm not sure which type of marker it is). She is scheduled to have a mammogram soon, but should I be worried? How significant is this increase? Thanks in advance. Her normal range is about 36. And her last treatment was a bit over 10 years ago I think. I believe she was at a IIB stage; I'm not positive about the lymph nodes, but my dad mentioned that she has been experiencing pain in that area recently.
What is a "normal" tumor marker number for testicular cancer? ? Ok, so my husband just had an u/s done last week. His right testicle has been very hard and lumpy for over three years now. The u/s showed "suspicious". We were referred to a urologist who did Beta Count, but we dont get the results back until tomorrow. He's being scheduled for surgery for removal of the right testicle this week. What numbers should I look for tomorrow w/ his bloodwork? We recently found out my mother in law has stomach cancer, and I've been a mess ever since I found out my husband may have testicular cancer. What worries me the most is that his testicles have been like this for well over 3yrs now... I wanted to add that other then the hardness and the lumps, my husband has had no symptoms what so ever of testicular cancer.

Can a local tumor in the lung spread to develop bone metases without affecting the rest of the lungs? My father has been diagnosed with non-small carcinoma in the right lung. The doctors also found a lesion in the back bone L4 which is reported as neoplastic. A biopsy on the lung tumor was performed and confirme malignancy. On that basis they are presuming that the bone lesion is also a malignant cancer tumor. However, what seems to be strange is that the CT scan results for the rest of the right lung, the left lung, abdomin, intestines, bladder, prostate, pancreas are totally clear. His oncology blood markers are also clear. The bone scan apart from the suspected lesion at L4 is totally clean, and his blood test results are acceptable. His general health conditions are good. He was on a diet, stopped it and gained 3KGS within a span of 10 days. He simply does not show any of the symptoms of a stage IV cancer patient. The doctors said they cannot operate because of the bone lesion. Had it been only in the lungs they would. We are concerned that they might be making the wrong connection

PSA and Tumor Markers for Prostate Bone Metastasis? This message pertains to the utility of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), for the treatment of Advanced Prostate Cancer. PSA writes Dr. John Lee (Harmone Balance for Men) is produced both within the Prostate Gland and the Breast Tissue. He further writes that the normal cells produce PSA, an anti angiogenesis defence when there are abnormally growing cells in the prostate. This seems to indicate that the PSA has no correlation with what is happening in the bone and anywhere outside prostate. Is this correct? There are further questions: (a) How do we monitor bone metastasis and other situations where the cancer has escaped out of prostate. (non-Bone Scan/MRI options) (b) Are there other prostate tumor markers that can tell us the tumor loads/tumor activity in non prostate areas such as the bones. (c) Will Acid Phosphatase levels inform us the status of prostate metastasis on bone. (d) Are Osteoblastic/Osteocystic/Osteocytic rates right parameters to track. Sam
Increase in Breast Cancer Tumor Markers CA27-29? I was diagnosed last year with breast cancer. I have tumor markers from three of my more recent blood tests. I know that anything below 38 is normal for the CA27-29, but in January it was 14.7, in April 17 .8 and May 20.08. My oncologist is on vacation so I have to wait to talk to him. Does anyone have experience with these tests? Additional details that give me concern about the tumor markers going up is my recent CAT scan, which my oncologist said he wasn't overly concerned about because they were so small, but.... there is a small 0.2 centimeter parenchymal nodual in right upper lobe and borderline enlarged lymph node in right hilum. Thank you for all the information. Logically...I know it's a waiting game. Trying not to obsess. I'm 42, considered to be Stage 2B. Tumor was 2.5 cm and 3 out of 16 nodes were positive . ER, PR and Her2/new Positive. I had mastectomy, chemo, radiation and finishing my year of Herceptin. Now on Femara.

What causes a false positive on tumour marker? My 35-year-old husband was recently in the hospital with pancreatitis. They did an ultrasound, mri, ct scan and found that his pancreas was inflamed. Most recently, they did some blood tests looking for tumour markers. We got the results yesterday and the doctor said he was perplexed; while, he said, a mark of 70-80 would be high, my husband's was an astonishing 2000. As he isn't fatigued or losing weight, not nauseous, etc... and has only a sore back as a symptom, all the doctor could say was that he'd have to investigate further as it didn't make sense. Of course I am still terrified. Has anyone had experience with a false positive and knows what else could cause such a result? The doctor mentioned perhaps auto-immune pancreatitis but my husband isn't jaundiced either so it didn't really look like that was the case. Thank you in advance.

Can fat necrosis initially developed after a TRAM flap reconstruction of the breast continue after 3 years? After a modified mastectomy and a TRAM flap reconstruction I developed fat necrosis due to poor blood supply to the flap. This fat necrosis consisted of a large lump (2 x 3 in). However after 3 years I noticed a pea size lump that developed around the incision and now after a year is 3 times larger. A biopsy showed that the lump is fat necrosis. However it continues to grow. Is it possible for fat necrosis to continue to grow or could this be a cancer tumor recurrence that has not been properly diagnosed? I hear different answers from different doctors, such as fat necrosis do not usually grow, I don't know, fat necrosis continue to grow. I am confused and worried. My tumor marker has always been on the high side (30-39) but always consistent.

My doctors are still stumped and I hope someone can help? Hi, I wrote on Saturday re. a med question which began "my doctors are stumped....I am a 42 yr. old housewife, and everyone seems to think that I am either a med student looking for a test exam answer or criticizing the fact that I had no typos in my question. I have been dealing with Thrombopenia for 16 yrs. and now that the tumor markers have come back positive, I am worried enough to try to post my question here...my labs are the following: HLA b-5 pos (90%), HLA b-27 and dr-7 neg, Platelets 50K, Hemoglobin 18 (norm to 16), hematocrit 52, CEA pos. and CA19-9 at 6 (norm 0-3). Hepatosplenomagaly with high AST, ALT, and Gamma GT.They want to do an abdom. and thorax CT and a bone marrow. My original ? is still posted if anyone is interested in reading it, and hopefully helping me to get some insight in what could be going on. I swear that I am not a med student (although my mom is a RN) and am serious about what my exams results are. Ive been seen by 6 drs and no answers yet.Thank you
I'm 50, on perm dis., going on medicare as a stg 4 cancer pt. if i earn $ can i ever loose my medicare? I am stage four cancer patient, with disability and medicare. Now, however, I am starting to feel better. I can't raise my daughter on 2K a month from disability, but I am scared to loose my medicare. But I am combining my non-chemo treatment with herbal treatments and my tumor markers are going down. i feel good and want to go back to work. waht do you think?
SOLID lesion found on testicular ultrasound? My husband is 34 yrs old & had a testicular ultrasound after seeing our PP because of pain he began feeling. On physical exam he found a lump & put him on Cipro but sent him for an u/s just to be safe. He sees a urologist on Tuesday because of the findings on u/s. Here is what the u/s report reads: Findings: There is bilateral testicular flow. The testicles are slightly inhomogeneous in appearance. No focal mass lesion is seen in the testicle. In the right lower scrotum there is an area of masslike density which on ultrasound exam appears to be separate from the testicle. This measures approximately 1 cm in diameter and reportedly is the area of palpable abnormality as demonstrated by the patient. This is a solid lesion of uncertain etiology. It does not appear to be within the right testicle but is in the right scrotal area. There are changes on the left suggesting a left varcocele. Summary: 1. 1 cm mass lower medial right scrotum 2. Left testicular varcocele 3. Mild inhomogeneity of testicles without focal mass What are the possibilites of a solid lesion in the scrotum? The u/s tech said it's on the wall of the testicle. What can this be since it's not infections and what can we expect at this appointment-what ?'s should we ask? No tumor markers checked-CBC showed AST was high at 51 (range 0-40) and uric acid high at 8.5 (2.4-8.2)…he does suffer w/gout.
Disturbed by blood test results as my mum told me she needs to go for a scan around abdomen area? I went through my 76 year old mum's medical report after she told me that she has to go for a scan next week, a more thorough investigation, just to make sure according to her doctor. I thought I just wait till result of scan is ready, but I can't help wondering what the followings really mean, or indicate. Test results show a healthy report except for the followings: Tumor Marker for CA 19-9. The result is 47.8 u/ml (Reference is 0-37). Urinalysis Test for Red Blood Cells' result is 83 cells/ul (Reference 0-3) Urinalysis Test for Epithelial Cells' result is 33 cells/ul (Reference 0-15) Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Test Lp(a)'s result is 104.7mg/dl (Reference 2.5 - 30) Otherwise for the above, the rest of the results show readings with normal range.

Low red & white blood cell count and also low platelets? My mom has been having a problem with her blood counts being low for quite some time now. A little history on her first. She was diagnosed with Hep C about 10 years ago and really went into denial about it and still continued to drink and was also a drug user. She finally had a wake up call one day and I am not for sure the reason but she started taking her health seriously and got cleaned up and started going to the doc about the Hep C. She does have cirrhosis from the Hep C and drinking. She got the interferon treatments and according to her doctor, she has done remarkably well, the best he had seen really. The doc even said she should be the poster child for Hep C treatments. Before starting the treatments, she did have borderline low blood counts but after treatment started, it really dropped and they had to put her on all sorts of meds for it. They came back, she finished treatment and everything has seemed better. She still continues to see her doc and is still clean. She has blood work done and a liver ultrasound every 6 months, and besides the the blood counts getting lower and lower, the tests have been unremarkable. Now the blood counts are so low they are sending her to a hematologist/oncologist for further treatment. So my question is, what conditions would cause this? They are doing tumor marker tests every 6 months and if it was cancer, wouldn't it have been picked up with one of those tests? I am just a worried daughter and I know that she has trashed her own body but I still love her and am concerned.
How to handle insurance issues, that are the doctor's fault? My husband went to the doctor about a lump. He ordered an MRI. We were told that our insurance would be used for the MRI, as it had for the doctor visit. We paid over $300 in co-pays, and then received a $4,000 bill from the doctor for the MRI. After quite a bit of personal research, the doctor didn't not pre-approve the MRI or bill the insurance properly. As a side note, this doctor and the hospital is very questionable. He was demeaning, and didn't make any rational sense when speaking. We have since switched doctors and found that a Tumor Marker Blood Test would have been faster, better and more accurate for our situation. We went to the questionable doctor because we had just moved and he was the only one with openings. We made a mistake by going to him. I am so glad my husband is now with a doctor who can properly help him. But we can not afford this bill, nor would we have agreed to it if he wasn't going to use our insurance. The insurance is also concerned that he chose a more expensive, less accurate procedure before a blood test. What do we do? The doctor who ordered the MRI, read the MRI and it was all preformed in hospital. He is not a private doctor.
Possibility of Colon Cancer? Hi I'm a 22 year old female. I had blood work done 2 months apart, and my CEA tumor marker has increased from 5.7 to 6.9. I'm a non-smoker, and I don't really drink either. I have on/off rectal bleeding for over a year now, often dismissed as hemorrhoids because of my young age. Lately I've noticed the bleeding seems to be more faded and in lesser quantity than before somewhat like a stamp that is running out of ink; I used to bleed loads of blood, which looks like I'm having my period from behind. Fecal occult blood test was negative although I swear I saw a tiny hint of blood on the toilet paper that day. All other test results were fine, except a slightly high Alkaline Phosphatase. I also have chest tightness and stomach pains which my GP thinks are unrelated and insignificant. I'm also burping more these days, and feel bloated soon after eating, as well as experiencing generalized abdominal discomfort. I don't have a family history of colon cancer, although my dad has IBS. I'll be seeing a specialist in 2 days' time, but till then, do you think that I could have colon cancer?
